History of the Club

United Bristol Hospitals RFC was founded in 1946 and is predominantly comprised of Medical, Veterinary and Dentistry students from the University of Bristol, as well as local doctors. In recent years we have experienced a surge in interest from players outside the health sciences and are proud to have an increasing representation from the wider student body.
Our 2017/18 season was the most successful in our club’s long history and saw our 1st XV win both the National Association of Medical Schools (NAMS) Plate and the Gloucester 3 League, resulting in promotion to the Gloucester 2 South League for the coming season. Our 2nd XV play in Bristol’s local intramural league which allows us to link with both local club teams as well as those in the wider South West region. Home games are played just outside of Bristol on a brand new 3G pitch at Coombe Dingle Sports centre complete with covered stand, dugouts and a lively clubhouse.

Where does the money go?

  • UBHRFC is independently managed and receives no funding from the University of Bristol and is therefore entirely dependent on sponsorship and membership support, without which it couldn’t function at its current level.

  • Professional coaching: we currently employ four coaches – head coach, forwards coach, backs coach and skills coach.

  • Vital Physio

  • A significant portion of our budget is spent on fundamental costs such as hiring pitches and paying referees for our fixtures

  • Basic rugby equipment: balls, post protectors, cones, water bottles etc.

  • Sending our management team to training days and conferences to enable them to expand their knowledge and ensure our club is run in the best and most efficient way possible

  • Transport to away NAMS fixtures
